Aug 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka police shot and killed one suspect of a robber gang broken into a local journalist's house in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday and arrested the others.
Five people believed to be of a robber gang have entered the journalist's residence in the early hours of today and threatened to kill the occupants who had managed to report the robbery to the police via the 119 - emergency hotline.
The police have arrived in time to surround the residence and thwart the robbery. However, during the confrontation ensued with the robbers, the police have opened fire when one suspect stabbed a police officer injuring him seriously, local media reported.
A suspect who was shot during the melee succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while three police officers were also injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
The journalist, Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema, who is an associate editor of local newspaper Sunday Leader and the president of the Sri Lanka Journalists Trade Union, and her family were not hurt in the incident.
