Aug 22, Mannar; A Sri Lankan court Thursday further remanded 41 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for poaching in the island's territorial seas.
Mannar District Judicial Magistrate Ananthi Kanagarrathinam extended the detention of fishermen till August 29, PTI reported.
The Sri Lankan Navy arrested the two groups of fishermen, 21 of them in north of Mannar on July 6 and the other 20 on August 3 while fishing in Lankan waters.
The group of 21 was detained in Anuradhapura prison while the others were lodged in Vavuniya prison. They were produced today before the Mannar Magistrate who extended their remand. Later the fishermen were lodged in Vavuniya prison.
Sri Lanka says Indian fishermen, taking advantage of Sri Lanka's procedure of releasing them after mediation by the Indian High Commission office, are deliberately indulge in illegal fishing.
