Aug 22, Colombo: The Chief of Defense Staff of Sri Lanka General Jagath Jayasuriya says that more police personnel should be used to control protests.
The defense authorities are currently discussing the deployment of more police personnel to control protests instead of deploying army personnel, General Jayasuriya has said.
Responding to media queries on the deployment of military personnel to control protests like in Weliweriya earlier this month, the Defense Chief said that the police would be provided with additional training of dealing with such situations.
According to the General, the army should be called in to a situation only when the police cannot control it.
He added that intelligence agencies have been alerted to the possibility of certain elements attempting to disrupt national security in the run up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that is to take place in Colombo this November.
