Aug 21, Colombo: Parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) today said that the official residences of the Governors are also being used as electoral offices of the ruling alliance.
Addressing a press briefing held in Colombo today, the opposition MP said that the public offices, circuit bungalows and vehicles etc. are publicly misused by ruling alliance candidates for election propaganda.
Some chairpersons of state corporations are engaged in election propaganda misusing state property, he charged.
Jayasuriya said that the world has focused its attention on Sri Lanka with the presumption that the rulers are corrupted and violating human rights. The Commonwealth Heads of the Government meeting has also attracted the world attention on Sri Lanka.
In this backdrop a fair and free election is needed and the government is not acting to guarantee democratic elections, the MP noted.
The opposition MP said that the international community would not accept the results of a flawed election as true mandate. He challenged the government to go for free and fair elections if it has worked for the people as it says since people will pay due respect to them.
