Aug 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka Election Secretariat today announced the beginning of operations to remove the illegal publicity material of the Northern, Northwestern and Central Provincial Council elections.
Accordingly, the election officials have identified the unauthorized campaign offices in the three provinces and the Secretariat will launch the operation from August 23 to remove them. The police have been called for support, the Secretariat noted.
The Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya expects the operation to be carried out for a week.
Election monitoring NGOs point out that illegal propaganda materials are wide spread in the areas where the elections are to be held in September.
They include illegal electoral offices of the candidates as well as the hoardings, banners, posters etc.
The election propaganda material are allowed to be displayed only at the venues where the election rallies are held but the candidates now spend millions to display the material everywhere as a habit, an election official said adding that those are mostly seen in the Kurunegala district.
