Aug 21, Hambantota: The 100th ship docked in Sri Lanka's Hambantota Mahinda Rajapaksa International Port a few days ago since the port's opening in November 2010 , Sri Lanka Ports Authority officials said.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority said the 100th ship, the vehicle transporter ISTRA ACE registered in Bahamas, docked on August 17.
The 176 meter long, 32 meter wide ship built in 2007, has a gross tonnage of 41,000 and can carry 4,900 vehicle units.
The harbor is mainly used as an automobile transshipment handling center after port authorities decided to divert all vehicle shipments to the southern harbor to ease the heavy traffic congestion in Colombo harbor.
Since June 06 2012, the port has handled 36,000 vehicle units and of them 15,000 has been transshipped.
The port plans to launch bunkering operations in near future.
