Aug 21, Colombo: The Elections Commissioner of Sri Lanka has ordered the closure of all illegal election offices set up in the areas that are facing provincial council elections on September 21st.
Elections Department officials say that political parties as well as candidates have set up illegal offices in the North Western, Central and Northern Provinces.
The Elections Commissioner has issued a directive that such offices should be closed down before August 23.
Election monitors have continuously highlighted the violation of election laws by candidates including the operation of illegal election campaign offices.
A large number of illegal offices have reportedly been set up in the Kurunegala district where a large number of incidents have been reported in comparison to the other districts where polls are due to be held.
