Aug 20, Colombo: A Buddhist monk, who was forcibly handed over to the police by Sri Lanka's Buddhist extremist group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), was found to be the monk whose image has become a famous figure in media recently.
This monk was caught drunk and handed over to police by BBS yesterday at Dematagoda. He was committing no legal offense but an ethical error since consuming alcohol is banned to Buddhist monks by religion.
The monk was later identified as Kirindiwela Piyarathana Thero.
He was seen on a truck at the opposition protest held on August 14th. United National Party (UNP) MP Harsha de Silva was captured putting an arm around his shoulder, a posture considered insulting by Buddhists.
MP Harsha de Silva publicly apologized for the mistake and said that he was trying to keep balance for few seconds when protesters pushed behind him.
