Aug 20, Galle: Sri Lankan authorities today denied media reports that oil is leaking from a barge anchored at the Galle Harbor in the south.
Sri Lanka media reported that an oil leak is suspected of taking place from an anchored barge that is reportedly sinking at the Galle Harbor.
However, Sri Lanka Ports Authority rejected the news of an oil leak.
The Operational Manager of Maritime Environment Protection Authority Jagath Gunasekara said that the oil stock was removed from the barge as a precautionary measure.
Sri Lankan port authorities raised concerns when the barge sailed into the Gall Harbor in March 2003 with a supply of 1805 tonnes of LP gas as the LP gas was leaking from the barge and urged the Mundo Gas Pvt. Ltd. which imported the stock to unload the gas quickly.
Since then the barge has been anchored in the harbor as Mundo wound up operations in Sri Lanka shortly after it was introduced.
