Aug 19, Chennai: Opposition and United National Party (UNP) Leader of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremasinghe says that opposition political parties plan to commence a campaign to push for a general election next year.
While addressing reporters in Chennai during his three-day visit to India, Wickremasinghe explained that a new alliance would be formed for the purpose as all communities including the majority Sinhalese were facing various issues in the country.
The UNP and several other opposition political parties, along with civil society organizations and trade unions will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday (22) to form an official alliance, Force for Unity.
Force for Unity will carry out a campaign against the government and rally people across the country to demand a general election next year.
Sri Lanka holds general parliamentary elections every six years and the last general election was held in April 2010.
Force for Unity will hold a public meeting and campaign in Weliweriya on the 27th of this month to rally the public.
