Aug 18, Colombo: The University of Colombo Institute of Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences (UCIARS) at Weligatta in Hambantota district has introduced an online agriculture program for the farming community in Sri Lanka to educate them in modern knowledge in agriculture.
The Institute offers online courses to obtain a Diploma in Agro-technology for anyone engaged in employment/self-employment in the field of agriculture or agri-business without barriers of age, distance, time and academic background.
According to the UCIARS, the Diploma in Agro-technology has eight certificate courses with the duration of three months for each certificate course.
The courses are offered in crop husbandry, horticulture and new application in agriculture, crop protection, irrigation technology, post-harvest technology, food technology, floriculture, and agro business management.
Programme Coordinator Sansala Widanapathirana has said that the lack of knowledge on the latest advancements in agriculture technology has resulted in farmers suffering massive losses in their harvests.
According to Widanapathirana, there are currently about 5,000 farmers involved in programs provided by the Institute.
He has added that the Institute has successfully ended four batches, while the fifth is to start next month.
