Aug 17, Colombo: A group of Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarians and ministers representing the Kurunegala district has submitted a letter to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa against the Minister Johnston Fernando.
They have complained that Minister Fernando was using a large number of state vehicles and other public property for the provincial council election campaign of his son.
The group has listed the instances of use of public property by the Minister Fernando with written evidence including the numbers of the vehicles, Lakbima Sinhala newspaper reported.
The group has accused that Minister Fernando's supporters with the knowledge of the Minister are tearing their posters and vandalizing their campaign offices. The ministers have complained that Minister Fernando is terrorizing the district.
They have pointed out that the situation has a bad effect on the ruling party and a free and fair election cannot be guaranteed under these circumstances.
However, Minister Fernando has rejected the allegations against him saying the ministers are mudslinging against him and his son.
The President has reportedly stated that the secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena and the secretary of the United People's Freedom Alliance Susil Prema Jayantha will be informed to take action to resolve the issue.
