Aug 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Muslim party and government ally Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has initiated disciplinary action against the party chairman Minister of Productivity Promotion Basheer Segu Dawood.
SLMC sources say the disciplinary inquiry against the chairman will be held on August 24.
The Minister is accused of compelling the party members to go against the SLMC decision to contest the provincial council election independent of the alliances. He is also accused of accepting a cabinet portfolio without the prior approval of the party.
The SLMC which is a coalition partner of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has already sacked five party activists for disobeying party decisions to contest the Northern, Central and North Western provincial council elections independently.
The five members of the SLMC executive committee have rebelled against the party's decision to contest the elections separately and they have filed nominations with the ruling alliance.
