Aug 16, Colombo: A survey carried out by Sri Lanka's Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (STD/AIDS) Campaign of the Ministry of Health reports that 20% of people who have unprotected sex in the country contract HIV/AIDS.
The survey has revealed that on a daily basis 140,000 individuals in the country are engaged in unprotected sex with prostitutes, as well as being involved in extra-marital relationships.
Director of Campaign, Dr. Sisira Liyanage has said the figure had been revealed during a survey the Campaign had conducted with the assistance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The survey had also revealed that the number of patients who are HIV positive due to unprotected sex is an increase of 100 percent compared to the figures on record for last year.
"The trend is on the increase, year after year, while we don't see a decrease in the numbers," Dr. Liyanage has said.
