Aug 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the President has failed to respond to the petition handed by members of Force for Unity on Wednesday (14) demanding answers on the Weliweriya incident.
The Presidential Secretariat had said on Wednesday that a response would be given within 24 hours.
UNP sources when contacted said that the response was not given as promised even after the lapse of 24 hours.
"We will continue with the protest campaign demanding justice for the people in Weliweriya and democracy for the country," a senior UNP MP said.
The UNP is to hold a public meeting and protest in Weliweriya on August 27th.
Meanwhile, arrangements are now being made to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between opposition political parties, civil society organizations and trade unions to form an alliance to continue with the campaign launched by Force for Unity.
