* New opposition MP takes oath in Sri Lanka parliament

Aug 08, Colombo: Nalin Nilantha Bandara Wijerathna, the main organizer of the opposition United National Party (UNP) for Bingiriya electorate was sworn in before the Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody today as new UNP parliamentarian of Kurunegala district.

He fills the vacancy created by the former MP Dayasiri Jayasekera who resigned from his parliamentary membership last month and crossed over to the government with the intention to contest at the elections for North Western Provincial Council under ruling party ticket.

Bandara Wijerathna was the next candidate in the UNP preferential votes list. He received 29,669 votes in the Parliamentary Elections in 2010.
