Mar 16, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government on Friday said it will launch a tourism road show in Russia and Ukraine in order to attract more tourists to the country.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau with the objective of furthering the propagation of the tourism industry has organized a three week Tourism Promotional Campaign, the "Mega Tourism Road Show" in the Russian Federation and Ukraine covering Moscow, St Petersburg and Kiev.
The road show will commence on 17 March 2013 with the activation of the shopping mall "Mega Dybenko" in St Petersburg followed by three week long Mega Road Show in Moscow and Kiev.
Major events conducted during the campaign are Shopping Mall Activation, workshops on Sri Lankan tourism, cultural shows, photo exhibitions, press conferences and participation in world renowned travel and trade fairs; MITT 2013 in Moscow, UITT 2013 in Kiev and Ukrainian Travel Forum 2013, the SLTPB said.
"It is of utmost importance that the tourism industry and destination be promoted and advertised well in order to attract more tourists keeping in view the ambition of the government," the SLTPB said in a statement.
Main participants in the road show are the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Laksala, Siddhalepa, Srilankan Airlines and few well known travel and tourism companies. Partners of reputed Sri Lankan travel and tour companies in Russia and Ukraine are the foreign collaborators of the road show.
Tourist arrival from Eastern Europe rose 43.6 percent last year with tourist arrivals from Ukraine rising 124.2 percent and arrivals from Russia by 32.8 percent.
Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals rose 13.4 percent in January this year according to the data released last Wednesday by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
Sri Lanka fulfilled its target of one million tourist arrivals last year and earned over US$ 1 billion from tourism.
Since the end of the war against the Tamil Tiger terrorists in May 2009, the country has seen steady rise in tourist arrivals every year for the past four years.
