* Sri Lankan President calls on Japanese Emperor, meets Prime Minister

Mar 14, Tokyo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on a four-day official visit to Japan had an audience with Japan's Emperor Akihito Thursday morning.

Emperor Akihito and Princes Michiko received the President and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa at the Imperial Palace.

The Emperor hosted a lunch in honor of the President.

The Emperor of Japan is the ceremonial monarch in Japan's system of constitutional monarchy and is the head of the Japanese Imperial Family. He is also the highest authority of the Shinto religion.

Later in the day President Rajapaksa met with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Abe's official residence in Tokyo and held discussions on a range of issues.
