Mar 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government is to amend the Electricity Act No.9 of 2009 in order to remove the tender procedures in government to government agreements.
UNP parliamentarian, Economist Dr. Harsha de Silva says the proposed amendment would result in creating space for corruption.
He has observed that section 43 of the Act would be amended and once adopted, there would not be a competitive tender procedure if a generation plant in the country receives a bid from a foreign sovereign nation.
He has added that such an agreement could be finalized with Cabinet approval.
According to Dr. de Silva, the lack of transparency in such transactions could result in large scale corruption.
