Mar 12, Colombo: An education sector trade union in Sri Lanka says that there are thousands of vacancies for teachers in the country.
The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) says that there are over 20,000 vacancies in schools around the country.
General Secretary of CTU, Joseph Stalin has said that most of the teacher vacancies are in the primary section and on some important subjects.
According to the CTU, the main cause of the problem is the lack of management of human resources by the Education Ministry.
He has noted that the education authorities need to stop the unregulated recruitment of teachers in order to address the issue.
According to Stalin, immediate steps need to be taken to address the shortage of teachers.
