* Sri Lanka government to renew national identity cards every 10 years
Mon, Mar 4, 2013, 11:46 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 04, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is considering renewing National Identity Card (NIC)s every 10 years, the Department of Registration of Persons has said.

According to the requirements of the Persons Registration Act, currently there is no validation period for the NIC and an official date is not provided for the renewal of the NIC.

The Persons Registration Act will therefore be amended accordingly to implement the new measure.

The Department of Registration of Persons has decided to issue the national identity cards electronically and the amendments are expected to facilitate it as well.

The Department aims at renewing national IDs simultaneous to the introduction of electronic identity cards.

The Department said that discussions have been held with several sectors in this connection.
