* Buddhist Chief Prelate holds discussion with Sri Lanka Muslim leaders
Sat, Mar 2, 2013, 10:29 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 02, Colombo: Chief Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter in Sri Lanka Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sumangala Thera has held a discussion with a delegation of members from the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL).

The discussion has reportedly been successful in resolving the current clash between some members of the Sinhala community and the Muslim community in the country.

The Thero has said at the discussion that he was pleased with the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama's proposal to limit the halal certified products only to the Muslim community.

"There have been many Muslim leaders in the past who have cooperated with the Sinhalese leaders to preserve the country's unity," Ven. Sumangala Thero has observed.

The Thero has noted that any problems between the Sinhalese and Muslims should be resolved through dialogue and not confrontation.

Meanwhile, the Buddhist extremist group Bodu Bala Sena, which earlier rejected discussions with the ACJU, has reportedly expressed interest in discussing the Halal certification with the Ulama.

The Buddhist organization has said that not only the Halal certification process but the whole concept of Halal should be eradicated from the country.

The government says the Halal certification is needed for Sri Lanka's food exports overseas, especially to Muslim countries in the Middle East and South East Asia.
