* Main opposition party of Sri Lanka urges government to reduce cost of living
Fri, Mar 1, 2013, 10:50 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has suggested the government to work at reducing the cost of living.

UNP parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has said that government development projects like "Api Wawmu-Rata Nagamu" have also failed resulting in an increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables.

Explaining that the government's move to increase import taxes on food commodities to save the local farmers has also failed, the MP said the final outcome has been an increase in the cost of living and the increase of burdens on the masses.

According to Kariyawasam, the government lacked the will power to provide relief to the people and it needs to take active steps to reduce the cost of living instead of appointing more committees.
