June 10, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today granted bail to the District Court judge arrested by the investigators of the bribery commission on charges of bribery.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitya released the former Homagama District Court judge Sunil Abeysinghe on two personal securities of Rs.5 million each.

Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in Sri Lanka arrested the district judge on May 30 while he was allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs. 300,000 from a person in Hanwella area in return for favorable ruling on a court case that was to be heard by him.

The judge was arrested when he was accepting the bribe through his security officer. Two of his supporters identified as prominent businessmen were also arrested for threatening media personnel when the judge was brought to the Cinnamon Gardens police in Colombo following his arrest.
