* Elections Commissioner of Sri Lanka asked to ensure people's faith in elections
Wed, Jan 30, 2013, 12:22 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya says the Elections Commissioner must take strict action against the recent incident where valid ballot papers of the last Presidential election were found near a school in the Gampaha District.

Elections Commissioner must ensure the people's faith in the elections system since there are elections scheduled to be held this year, the MP has said.

Jayasuriya has noted that the people should also stress the need for independent and unbiased elections.

The UNP MP has expressed grave concern at the finding of valid ballot papers from the Nuwara Eliya District in the Gampaha District.

"We also have in our possession 64 ballot papers that were found in a canal near the Technical College, Ratnapura," Jayasuriya has said, adding that despite government claims that the ballot papers were samples, it had been found by professional analysts to have been valid papers.

According to Jayasuriya, many irregularities had been recorded from several districts during the last Presidential election.
