Jan 21, Colombo: The Working Committee of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today made several key appointments but postponed the appointment of a deputy leader.
The Working Committee approved the re- appointment of party veteran Gampaha district parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera to the Assistant Leader of the UNP while former national organizer Daya Gamage who is a member of the Eastern Provincial Council was re-appointed to the position.
However, the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe requested more time to appoint the Deputy Leader.
UNP sources say that a disciplinary probe is underway against the former Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa. Wickremasinghe has decided to conduct an inquiry into Premadasa's participation in the impeachment debate when he was not scheduled to speak at the debate.
Colombo district MP Ravi Karunanayaka's name has also been mooted as the deputy Leader of the party, sources say.
