Jan 19, Colombo: The Chinese government has agreed to grant a consignment of sports gear worth Rs. 50 million to the Sri Lankan government to be distributed among the children in Northern Sri Lanka.

An official agreement to donate the sports equipment was signed yesterday with the participation of China's Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wu Jianghao and External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris at a function held in Temple Trees.

The sports equipment is to be distributed among schools and sports clubs within the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts.

Addressing the function the Chinese Ambassador has said that he toured several areas in the North including Jaffna some time ago and observed the change that has taken place in the areas affected by the conflict.

The Ambassador has reiterated his government's support to uplift the civilian life and strengthen school education in the region.

Minister Peiris has appreciated China's assistance and noted that the government hopes to identify hidden talents among the children in the war-battered region and improve their talents to bring them up to national and international standards.
