Feb 26, Kandy: The Kandy Municipal Council in Sri Lanka's Central Province plans to charge a tax for garbage collection, according to local media reports.
The local government body of the second busiest city to the capital Colombo is faced with a severe problem of solid waste disposal and plans to charge a garbage collection tax from luxury hotels in the city.
Deputy Mayor of the municipal council, Sena Dissanayake has said that the council was faced with a massive problem where garbage collection is concerned.
He has explained that a load of nearly 150 tons of garbage is collected on a daily basis from the hotels in Kandy and the municipal council does not charge a tax for the collection.
According to Dissanayake, the matter of charging a tax for garbage collection is to be taken up for discussion this week in the council and the hotels would be informed of the decision.
