Feb 26, Colombo: The Sri Lanka government has decided to establish sports medical units attached to all major public hospitals in the island.
The decision was taken through an understanding between the Ministries of Health and Sports. The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena and the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage held discussions in this regard.
The first sports medical unit has been established at the Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital recently. A special sports workshop was also held on February 24 under the patronage of this unit.
The doctors who have studied sports medicine will be attached to these units. The government intends to enhance the knowledge on healthy sports practices and the prevention of sports related health injuries through these sports units.
