* Sri Lanka Sports Minister orders to hold election of football federation anew
Tue, Feb 26, 2013, 12:57 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage has directed the Director General of Sports to cancel the election of office bearers of the Sri Lanka Football Federation and to hold the election again.

Sri Lanka Football Federation officials were elected recently without a contest and the Minister has directed to recall nominations and urged the elected officials also to hand over nominations again.

The Minister charged that the elections of office bearers of the football federation had become a kind of sharing of positions according to leniencies.

The Minister pointed out that Sri Lanka which was at 110th position in world football ranking had fallen to 193 in recent times.

A major tournament in Sri Lanka recently saw the participation of only 147 sports clubs, the Minister stated. He also pointed out that mere 300 spectators watched a major tournament held in Sugathadasa stadium.
