Feb 25, Colombo: Several cricket clubs of Sri Lanka are reportedly taking steps to prevent former Sri Lanka Cricket Chairman, MP Thilanga Sumathipala once again contesting for the post.
The cricket clubs are planning to petition the International Cricket Council (ICC) highlighting the ICC rule of disqualifying the persons engaged in betting businesses becoming cricket administrators.
Sumathipala is the Managing Director of Sumathi Group which has a betting business.
He was in the race for the chairman post last year but withdrew his nomination just before the election.
The nominations for the election of office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket will close on February 28th. The election is scheduled to be held on March 30.
In addition to Sumathipala, former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga and former Chairman of cricket interim committee Jayantha Dharmadasa who is the brother of current Chairman Upali Dharmadasa also have expressed interests in contesting for the post.
