Feb 21, Colombo: High Commissioner of India, Ashok K. Kantha will be on a two-day visit to Northern Province on 23-24 February 2013, High Commission of India in Colombo said in a statement.
Besides participating in various events in Jaffna and Vavuniya during his visit, the High Commissioner will also attend the annual feast of St. Anthony's Church at Kachchativu Island.
The annual feast of the St Anthony's Church in Kachchativu Island will be held from February 23rd to 25th.
Since its resumption in 2010 after a gap of 26 years due to the terrorist war, the feast has been held every year with the participation of a large number of Indian and Sri Lankan devotees.
Last year nearly 3,500 Indian devotees participated in the traditional pilgrimage and this year about 4,000 Indian devotees are expected to participate in the feast.
The Indian devotees will be arriving on the island on 23 February and will return on 24 February after the morning Mass, the High Commission said.
The High Commissioner will visit Kachchativu Island on the morning of 24 February to attend the Mass. He will also meet with the Indian devotees during his visit.
Facilitation and full support is provided by the Government of Sri Lanka for this annual pilgrimage.
Sri Lanka Navy, under the direction of the Defense and Urban Development Ministry and the supervision of Navy Commander, has taken steps to provide the islet with necessary facilities for the feast in addition to the security for the festival.
The High Commission of India, Colombo and the Consulate General of India, Jaffna will also deploy officials to the Island to assist the pilgrims.
