Feb 13, Colombo: Envoys of Sri Lanka and Belarus in Russia have held discussions on ways to strengthen the bilateral corporation between the two countries, Belarusian mission in Russia said.

Ambassador of Belarus to Russia Igor Petrishenko and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia and Belarus on concurrent Udayanga Weeratunga met in Moscow on February 12 and exchanged views on possible ways of strengthening political dialogue, the development of bilateral relations and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation.

"The parties discussed a wide range of bilateral issues: the development of the legal framework, conducting the short term Lankan delegation's visit to Minsk, the economic and trade cooperation, tourism and education," the Belarusian mission said in a media statement.

They also confirmed the focus on the further cooperation, including in the framework of international organizations.

The Republic of Belarus and the Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations in November 2000.

The mutual trade between Belarus and Sri Lanka in 2012 totaled US$46.2 million, an increase of 116% from 2011. Belarusian exports of only potash fertilizers made up US$35.16 million of the trade while imports from Sri Lanka were tea, tires, clothes and textile.
