Feb 12, Colombo: Displaced people in Sri Lanka's North who have been unable to return to their original homes due to their lands being occupied by the military, will hold a hunger strike on the 14th of this month.
The hunger strike is to be held in Thelippalai in Jaffna
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Spokesperson Suresh Premachandran has said the hunger strike has been organized by people from 13 refugee camps in the area.
He has explained that over 10,000 acres of civilian lands covering 27 grama seva divisions are being occupied by the army as high security zones (HSZs).
According to Premachandran, military forces are putting up barbed wire fences from Thondamanaru to Kirimale in Jaffna to divide civilian and military land.
He has added that although there was necessity for HSZs during the war, it was not necessary any more.
The Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) has recommended the government to provide alternate lands and or payment of compensation within a specific time frame if the government occupied lands cannot be released to the owners.
