* Sri Lanka's Elections Department records an increase of over 180,000 new voters

Feb 11, Colombo: The Elections Department of Sri Lanka has recorded an increase of over 180,000 new voters in the 2012 electoral list, which is to be used this year, from a year ago.

The largest increase in the number of new voters has been recorded from the Gampaha and Nuwara Eliya Districts where 20,000 more voters have been registered.

The number of voters in the districts of Colombo, Kandy, Kalutara, Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Galle, and Ratnapura increased by about 9,000 - 12,000.

New voter registrations have been low in the Trincomalee, Wanni, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa Districts.

According to the Elections Department statistics, total registered voter population in the country stands at 14,451,263 in 2012 while in 2011 it was 14,268,064.
