* Sri Lanka police nab 189 drunk drivers during New Year

Apr 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka police have arrested 189 people for driving while intoxicated during the New Year and prepare to take legal action against them.

The Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Buddhika Siriwardena has said that the police launched the initiative to arrest the drunk drivers during the festive season to minimize the traffic accidents and loss of life.

During the New Year festive days five fatal accidents have been reported and five people have died in Ampara, Anuradhapura, Galle, Mount Lavinia and Puttalam, the spokesman said.

He said the program will continue next few days also to catch the drunk drivers and urged the motorists not to drink and drive.
