* Sri Lanka Customs seize a large stock of narcotic areca nut

Nov 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs has seized eight containers containing areca nut believed to contain narcotic substances.

The containers which were taken into custody are to be opened today for inspections.

Sri Lanka Customs media spokesman Deputy Director General S.D.S. Gunathunga said that this is the biggest consignment of this type of areca that was seized.

He said that investigations are under way to ascertain the motive of importing such a huge quantity.

The Customs suspect it was imported targeting school children among whom the use of 'Beedah' made of this areca had reportedly become popular.
