* Sri Lanka's Bar Council to support a call for Supreme Court judges not to sit with the new CJ
Sun, Jan 13, 2013, 02:24 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 13, Colombo: The Bar Council of Sri Lanka has endorsed a call by senior lawyers to Supreme Court judges asking them not to sit with a new Chief Justice.

Eminent lawyers in a letter to Supreme Court judges have called on them not to sit with any new Chief Justice as the appointment of such would be illegal and unconstitutional in terms of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal rulings.

The Bar Council is the main decision making body of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL).

The Council has also decided that BASL President, Wijedasa Rajapakshe should seek a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the current clash the judiciary had with the executive and the legislature.
