* Deadline for Sri Lankan political parties to submit assets declarations extended until January 31

Dec 08, Colombo: The Election Secretariat of Sri Lanka has decided to grant time to political parties until January 31 to submit the annual account reports and the declarations of assets of the office bearers for the year 2011.

The Election Commissioner has taken this decision on a request by the political parties.

An Election Secretariat spokesman said that around 30 political parties have problems in documents submitted to the Election Commissioner.

The two major parties ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the opposition United National Party have also failed to submit assets declarations of two party officials, sources say.

Under the Political Party Registration Act it is mandatory for political parties to submit their annual reports to the Election Secretariat.

The parties failing to submit necessary documents will not be included in the list of recognized political parties for 2013, the spokesman said.
