Dec 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Sports has decided to conduct an urgent investigation regarding the standard of the newly laid Alsatan track of the Sugathadasa Stadium.
The investigation is carried out due to the complaints that certain areas of the track are not up to the standards and are deteriorating.
Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Anura Jayawickrama has appointed a committee chaired by Secretary of the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando to probe the incident.
The other members of the committee are national athletics coach Dervin Perera, veteran athlete Susanthika Jayasinghe and Deputy Director of Sports Sajith Jayalal.
The stadium was renovated urgently in early 2012 at a cost of Rs. 113 million to host the Asian Junior Athletics Championship. The new blue Alsatan synthetic track received the approval of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) to host international athletics meets.
Sources say the contract to lay the track was handed over to the tenderer who bid the minimum but the final installment is held due to the construction shortcomings.
