Dec 29, Colombo: Mahinda Deshapriya, the Election Commissioner of Sri Lanka has decided to summon the secretaries of all the registered political parties to the Election Secretariat next week.
The meeting is called to take a final decision on cancelling the registration of the parties that have not yet submitted the annual account reports for 2011.
The political parties are required to submit the annual audit reports and the declaration of assets of the office bearers but several parties have not yet complied with the requirements.
The Election Commissioner has decided to annul the registration of these political parties and the matter will be discussed at the meeting to be held next week.
Under the Political Party Registration Act it is mandatory for political parties to submit their annual reports to the Election Secretariat.
By mid-December, 15 political parties including several parties that represent parliament had not submitted the annual reports of the previous year. The Election Commissioner gave them time to do so before the end of the year 2012.
The parties failing to submit the annual reports will not be included in the list of recognized political parties for 2013.
The Election Commissioner last week said that the majority of parliamentarians representing minor political parties in Sri Lanka have not declared their assets and liabilities yet.
