Thu, Dec 20, 2012, 01:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 20, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is considering to establish special education units in all prisons for the prisoners to continue education, the Minister of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Chandrasiri Gajadeera has said.

The special education units will provide necessary books and other needs for the inmates to continue their studies while facilities for aesthetics, music and arts needed to build a sensitive citizen will also be provided.

While attending a prisoners' welfare meeting recently, the Minister has revealed that his Ministry will join the Education Ministry on this venture to provide basic education to those who have not received it.

Minister Gajadeera has noted that over 4,000 of inmates serving sentences in all prisons island wide have passed GCE O/L and another 2,000 have passed the GCE A/L while 73 percent of the inmates have attended school up to grade 8.

The Minister has noted that introducing these new methods would help to control the congestion within the prisons
