Dec 12, Colombo: The working committee of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today decided to complete the appointment of office bearers of the party before January 10.

Accordingly, appointments are to be made for Deputy Leader, Assistant Leader and National Organizer positions.

The UNP constitution provides for the general secretary and the treasurer to be appointed by the party leader.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake earlier said the party leader would nominate persons to the posts of deputy leader, chairman and national organizer and other key positions.

He had observed that any other nominations to the posts should be submitted with signatures of one third of the members of the Working Committee.

An election is to be held within the working committee in case of two or more candidates contest for the positions.

Presently, UNP Deputy Leader is MP Sajith Premadasa, Joseph Michael Perera, MP, is assistant leader and Provincial Councilor Daya Gamage is the National Organizer.

UNP internal sources say that more individuals are eyeing these positions.
