* Chair of PSC hearing impeachment motion of Sri Lanka top judge calls for media guidelines
Thu, Dec 6, 2012, 08:58 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 06, Colombo: Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the chairman of the parliamentary select committee (PSC) hearing the impeachment motion against the country's Chief Judge Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, has requested the Speaker to provide guidelines for the media.

Minister Yapa in reference to a question of privilege in parliament regarding recent newspaper reports on the activities and decisions of the PSC has asked the Speaker to formulate a set of guidelines for the media when reporting the proceedings of the PSC on the impeachment motion.

Under the standing orders, no authority is given permission to reveal the proceedings in whatever manner to the media and media has no legal basis to release the details of the proceedings.

Opposition member of the select committee Lakshman Kiriella has suggested that it would be more appropriate to open the PSC hearings to the media.
