Wed, Dec 5, 2012, 10:12 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 05, Colombo: The president of Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakse said that the presidents and secretaries of 80 associations affiliated to the BASL have been summoned to a special meeting.

The urgent meeting of the 160 senior lawyers is to be held on December 08 in Colombo. It has been summoned according to a decision of the executive committee of the BASL.

The BASL president said that several measures to safeguard the freedom of the judiciary would be discussed at this meeting. He said that the decisions taken at the meeting would be announced later.

BASL has vehemently objected the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake. The Association this week filed a fundamental rights petition against the impeachment motion.
