Sun, Dec 2, 2012, 10:56 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 02, Jaffna: The Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) of Sri Lanka has arrested four students of Jaffna University Saturday on suspicions of terrorist activities while a Jaffna-based Tamil movement has planned to stage a massive demonstration tomorrow against the police.

The four students, Secretary of the Jaffna University Students' Union, P. Darshanth, S.Soloman, Ganeshamoorthy Sudarshan and Kanakasuntharaswamy Janaka Jeyan have been arrested by the TID.

The four students are being interrogated over a petrol bomb explosion at the TELO political party office in Jaffna and over the pro-LTTE activities carried out last week to commemorate the dead Tamil Tiger fighters on the birthday of the slain LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran.

Police media spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody has told local media the TID was interrogating the four students in Vavuniya over the recent skirmishes in Jaffna.

Clashes erupted last Wednesday between the security forces and the Jaffna University students who were holding an event called Maaveerar' (Martyr' Day) to commemorate the dead fighters of the banned terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Several students were injured during the clash and students accuse the police of attacking them while the police allege the students of throwing stones at the officers and say they were compelled to act.

Meanwhile, Tamil National Front, a Tamil movement in Jaffna has planned to stage a demonstration tomorrow in Jaffna to protest the alleged attack on the students.

According to the organizers the major Tamil party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and several other Tamil political parties and civil society organizations have extended support to the demonstration.
