* Sri Lanka ruling party local government member suspected of rape and murder sacked
Sat, Dec 1, 2012, 02:13 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 01, Colombo: A local government body has approved sacking of its chairman accused of rape and murder of a mother and daughter.

Godakawela Pradeshiya Sabha yesterday approved a proposal to terminate the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance member L.H. Dharmasiri from the Chairman position.

Dharmasiri is currently in remand for the rape and murder of a teenage girl and her mother in Kahawatta, the Sabaragamuwa Province town.

Dharmasiri's, wife and brother along with a three wheeler driver who was involved in disposing the bodies have also been arrested for the double murder and remanded.

The suspect, who was a coordinating secretary to the Minister of State Administration John Senevirathna, was sacked earlier from that post.

Opposition United National Party (UNP) of the Council moved the proposal to sack the councilor and the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance seconded it.

The council decided to request the Commissioner of Local Administration to appoint the next in the list of preferential votes as a council member.

The suspected local government member has not attended the meetings of the council for around a year and he has not asked for leave as well.
