Sept 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's National Police Commission Secretary T.M.K.B. Tennakoon says that a new bill is being drafted to enact laws for paying compensation to the victims of police abuses.
According to the laws to be introduced, the Commission will decide the compensation needed to be paid to the victim. It will be informed to the relevant police officer and he will be directed to pay the compensation to the victim.
Legal action is to be initiated against the relevant police officer if he rejects or fails to pay the compensation.
So far, mostly the compensations of the victims of police abuse of power were from government coffers.
The new method is expected to enhance the discipline of the police officers.
