Sept 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka Water Supply and Drainage Board has decided to remove all public water taps from tenement settlements in Colombo to prevent the losses to the Board.
Deputy Chairman of the Board, Gamini Gunaratne told media that many of the public water taps are in a bad state and water leaks continuously adding to the losses incurred by the Board.
He also pointed out that no income is received for 49 percent of the water supplied to Colombo due to tampering with water meters and tapping of water pipes by unscrupulous elements.
However, Colombo Municipal Council sources say that the move will come under severe criticism from the lowest income group settlers of the city.
