Sept 28, Colombo: The Japanese government has provided a food grant assistance worth approximately 180 million rupees thorough the World Food Program (WFP) to support the School Meals Program in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.
Ambassador of Japan Nobuhito Hobo donated a consignment of canned fish to the WFP Thursday in the presence of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Deputy Country Director of WFP Mads Lofvall at the Ministry of Economic Development in Colombo.
The Embassy said in a statement that there is much concern about the nutritional needs of the resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) especially children in the North and good nutrition amongst children is of utmost importance since it has significant impact on their growth as well as their performance at school.
Japan hopes this assistance would further strengthen the long-standing friendship between the two countries as Japan and Sri Lanka commemorates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
